The Demo-to-Release

Carl Seanté@theprdcr

The exact checklist I run on every incoming record before we release. Mark each item Yes, No, or Not Sure to where your record stands.

Production Fundamentals

Was the record actually made well? This encompasses instrument choices, rhythm and harmonic choices, vocal choices, arrangement, and overall sonic construction. Is the mix clean and professional? Does it translate well across different speakers and systems? Are there any technical issues that need addressing? Does anything give you real pause (not timid doubt and whatabouts). This is the foundational gate — if the core production isn't solid, everything else becomes irrelevant.

Performance

Does the vocal or instrumental performance nail the execution or is there room to tighten things up?

Narrative

Does this story have strong replay value without feeling generic?

Market Viability

Does this sonic direction offer genuine commercial appeal in today's market?

Competitive Positioning

Does the track differentiate itself from what's already out there in that space?

The Vivid Moment

Does the track have a standout moment that evokes an emotional response, whether it's a hook, a dramatic turn, a heavy drop, or even a moment of silence?

Sync Readiness

Are the submixes ready with a mastered acapella, instrumental, TV-mix, clean, etc.? Does the track have a clear theme and mood identity? Would it be an easy clear or one-stop?

Weighted lightly — not every record is being pitched for sync.

Sample Clearance

If samples are used, are they cleared or clearable? If no samples were used, this is automatically clear.

Metadata

Is the cataloging complete and accurate? Title, genre tags, features, ISWC, ISRC (if you have it already), and all technical information that makes the track discoverable and trackable?

Splits

Are the master and publishing rights splits clear and properly assigned to all participants and their legal names? Is everyone who contributed properly credited and compensated?

AdvisoryIt's best to be confident in the first ten checkpoints before solidifying these two. But it is your choice. And although this has led to success in most cases, this is just a framework.

Artwork

Does the artwork complement the sonic direction?

Release Strategy

When and how will the track be released? Will it roll out as pre-order, direct-to-customer first, or simultaneous streaming? How does the release plan couple with social content strategy, and is that content already created or at least decided upon?
